Set in the hills of Bagno a Ripoli, between Florence and Chianti, Castello di Tizzano is a historic estate made up of a villa, a tower, a romantic park and a formal French garden.
With eight bedrooms and seven bathrooms for up to 16 guests, it suits large families and groups who want to stay somewhere with genuine history, close to the city yet surrounded by countryside.
Over the centuries the castle passed through some of Florence's leading families: the Scolari, relatives of the general Pippo Spano, then the Pitti and the Medici.
The present main building was raised on the remains of the old castle around the middle of the sixteenth century, and in 1585 Grand Duke Francesco de' Medici gave it to the sculptor Giambologna, whose pupil Pietro Tacca inherited it.
Prince Talleyrand owned it in the Napoleonic period, and since the late 1800s it has belonged to the Counts Pandolfini. Elizabeth Pandolfini, who inherited it in 1999, led a long restoration to return it to its former standing.
Outdoors, an infinity-edge pool of 12 x 8 metres, 1.5 metres deep, sits among olive groves with a sun terrace alongside. The panoramic terrace looks over the rolling Chianti hills towards the dome of Florence Cathedral, and there is outdoor dining space and private parking.
Inside, fireplaces and central heating make the house comfortable outside summer, and there is Wi-Fi, a kitchen with dishwasher, oven and microwave, laundry service and daily housekeeping. High chairs are available, pets are accepted and events can be held on the estate.
The villa is accessible for guests with reduced mobility, with step-free access.
