Villa Gilda is a two-storey residence in the heart of Sorrento, looking out across the Gulf of Naples. With five bedrooms and four bathrooms for up to nine guests, it suits families and small groups who want a villa in the centre of Sorrento with sea views, and who would rather walk than drive.
The house stands on the site of a Roman dwelling around 2,000 years old, and traces of it are still visible on the ground floor: sections of ancient wall and a cave that once served as a channel for spring water. It is a reminder that this stretch of coast was a favourite summer retreat of Roman nobility.
The interiors pair that history with natural linen, fine wood and designer pieces. Air conditioning, underfloor heating and a fireplace keep the house comfortable in every season, and access from the street is step-free.
The private garden covers about 300 square metres and faces the sea, with clear views to Ischia, Naples and Vesuvius. It has sun loungers, chairs and umbrellas, an outdoor shower, a barbecue, a solarium and a small exercise area.
A traditional Sorrento pergola shelters a table for twelve, and a heated six-seat hydromassage tub is the place to be at sunset.
The beach, good restaurants and the old town are only a few hundred metres away. The station and port are within walking distance, so day trips to Capri, Ischia, Ravello, Pompeii and Positano are straightforward. A car is not needed, though a space in a private car park nearby can be reserved if required.
